Kristina Nelson has written two doctoral dissertations on my music. One is a performer’s guide to all my published bassoon pieces. This guide is of course also relevant to other instrumentalists playing my music. The other is a study of my teaching methods. Both of these dissertations may be read here. The performer’s guide includes an examination of my compositional process.

I continue to compose constantly. This past year I wrote a quartet for flute, clarinet, bassoon and piano, a second sonata for oboe and piano, a ‘Blues Tarantella’ for clarinet and piano, a second 3-movement bassoon quartet, entitled ‘Celtic Reflections’, 2 pieces for large double reed ensemble, 8 lyrical pieces for oboe and piano or bassoon and piano, and ‘Mikalypso‘ for marimba and string quartet. The latter piece is on a new album by Mika Stoltzman entitled ‘If You Believe’ (available on iTunes), along with 4 other marimba pieces of mine. I’m presently writing a second partita for bassoon and piano.
At the request of my wife and children, I’m writing an autobiography. It’s been an interesting process. Luckily I still have many diaries from my younger years to spark my memory. Besides biographical stories, this book will contain my thoughts on performing, composing, teaching, etc.
As always, I listen to music for a couple of hours every night. For the last 3 months or so, I have been playing the Bach violin and harpsichord sonatas (with Rachel Podger on violin and Trevor Pinnock on harpsichord) every night just before going to bed. Other music that I have liked lately: an album by Polish pianist Leszik Mozdzer entitled ‘Polska’, Maria Schneider’s ‘Winter Morning Walks’, Chris Cheek’s ‘I Wish I Knew’, all Lee Konitz records from the 1950’s, the Salve Intemerata Mass by Thomas Tallis,, the Gloria Tibi Trinitas Mass by John Taverner, etc.

After 40 ½ years of university teaching, I finally retired in December, and I now have much more time to compose. I recently finished a quartet for flute, oboe, bassoon and piano which was premiered at the IDRS conference in Tempe on June 2nd. I’m currently working on my second trio for oboe, bassoon and piano.
TrevCo Music continues to sell my compositions that involve double reed instruments, but I now have 2 companies that sell my other music. One of these is Luyben Music, which publishes and sells my clarinet music. Later this month, they will release my ‘Eight Lyrical Pieces for Clarinet and Piano’ and my ‘Divertimento II for Clarinet and Bass Clarinet’. The former consists of arrangements of some of my most popular pieces from my CDs. A company called Sheetmusicplus.com now sells my marimba music and other miscellaneous pieces. They recently published my ‘Celtic Spirit for Flute Quartet’.
I don’t have any concerts on the horizon at the moment, but I will update my ‘concerts’ page as soon as concerts are booked.
I continue to listen to music for at least 2 hours every evening. Recently I have been inspired by the Brahms symphonies and serenades, the Bach keyboard partitas, the Keith Jarrett and Charlie Haden CD ‘Jasmine’, Avishai Cohen’s ‘Seven Seas’, ‘Skala’ by Mathias Eick, ‘Bienestan’ by Aaron Goldberg and Guillermo Klein, Brad Mehldau’s solos on ‘Live at Birdland’, and much more.
